Conceptual Framework. 

Morality as a concept is elusive and highly nebulous to give a particular definition to morality deals basically with humans and how they relate to other beings, both humans and non-humans. It deals with how human treat other being so as to promote mutual welfare, growth, creatively and meaning as they strive for what is good over what is wrong. Shrishim and Apenda as cited by utusa (2010) traced the concept of morality to its ontological pedigree thus;

Moral decadence is the process or act of behaving in a way that shows low moral standard. It means diminishing in the moral values among individuals or group of people in a particular society however muranos & ugwumba (2015) within the educational context, moral decadence is a way of behaving in a manner that is low below the moral standard of the school that is, it is the process of behaving in a way that shows low moral standards in the school. Saheed (2013) asserted that moral decadence has dealt a deadly blow on the ethical psyche of the nation. At the individual level, it has created lack of integrity in many. It has blurred the vision of the young and old so much that it has become difficult to distinguish between what is right an wrong at the corporate level, it has legitimized corrupt practices to an extent that morally upright fee ashamed of being so morally conscious. Look at the various development plans the nation has formulated, look at the vision 2010 and its ambitious programmes; as laudable as it was, poor management as well as immoral corporate practices combined to kill the vision.

From the foregoing definitions, the researcher wishes to state thus, that moral decadence is a decline or corrosion in ethnics, morals customs and values in our society. That is a fall or decline in our societal moral standards

THEORITICAL REVIEW OF MORAL DECADENCE

Review of Empirical Studies

The following studies are related to the current study. Muraino & Ugwumba (2014) carried out a study on the moral misconduct among students of higher institution in Nigeria; A case of selected higher institution in Imo state, Nigeria. The total population of 180 respondents comprising 30 lecturers and 150 students were used from three randomly sampled higher institutions in Imo state. The data were collected through interview and questionnaire. Thus data collected were analyzed using simple percentage, frequency counts and multiple regressions.

Thus, the finding includes;

  • That the identified causes of moral misconduct contribute significantly to student’s poor academic performance.
  • The strategies for restoring morality
  • The higher institution.

The researcher is recommendation is that there should be an inclusion of moral and religious as general courses in higher institution.

However, the moral decadence or misconduct students cannot be over emphasized. The empirical study deals on the moral misconduct among students of higher institution in Nigeria, A case of selected higher institution in Imo state. Therefore, it differs from the current study because Muraino & Ugwumba focus on the moral misconduct among student of higher instituting in Nigeria: A case of selected higher institution in Imo state while the current study focused on the teachers’ perception of the dimension of moral decadence among secondary school student in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Hence, the objective of the current study may encompass the research work of Muraina & Ugwumba but focuses on the dimension/forms of this moral decadence among secondary school students as perceived by teachers.

The study has common relationship with the current study because they both discuss moral misconduct or decadence and all seeked to address it. However, the current study seeks to know the teacher perception on the dimension of moral decadence. Hence, this study is different from all the studies conducted. Thus, this study has a hophole to fill and thus, very important and necessary to be conducted.

Summary of literature Review:

From the forgoing moral decadence is the process of behaving in a way that shows low moral standards. Such as truancy in the school, noise making, sexual abuse, cultism, absenteeism etc. which retard the ability for academic performance and achievement thus, leading to poor students’ academic performance this has posed high level of challenges which has married educational development achievement in the country.

From the literature, various reviewed of literature noted some causes of moral decadence such as parental factor, peer pressure, environment etc. some scholars also suggested ways of restoring morality in the schools. These are guideline on what to do, there should be re-orientation on moral values to students, possibly inclusion of moral values in their school curriculum. The teachers, parent and the society should also create awareness of the damages of moral decadence to the students.

The research also summarized other peoples work as review moral decadence has its negative impact on the student academic achievement. It is to the best knowledge of the researcher that there is no other work on the teachers’ perception on the dimension of moral decadence among secondary school students of Izzi L.G.A of Ebonyi State. It is due to this gap that leads to this study hence, the need to fill up the gap.

Research Method

This chapter describes the details of the research procedures used in carrying out this study. It is presented under the following: design of the study, area of the study, population of the study, sample and sampling techniques, instruments for data collection, validation of the instrument, methods of data collection, and method of data analysis.

Design of the study

The design of the study was descriptive surrey. The study focus on ascertaining the teachers’ perception of the dimension of moral decadence among secondary school students in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. It is also a design that is made to elicit information on the method and procedures of distribution of items to the population without manipulation of variables, Ali (2012).
