Effects of Solar Wind on Ionosphere

Introduction

The solar wind have a large influence on our planet, particularly in times of high solar activities (near sunspot), when the wind is strong and contain bursts corresponding to flares and Coronal Mass Ejection (CME’s) from the sun. The level of activities on the sun can have a large influence on the earth’s ionosphere. It is surprising to most people that the ionosphere makes up less than one percent of the mass of atmosphere above 100km, even though the ionosphere only contains a small fraction of atmospheric material and it is very important because of its influence on the passage of radio waves. The ionosphere is ionized plasma around the earth that is essential to sky-waves propagation and provides the basis or nearly all High Frequency (HF) Communications beyond the horizon. [Read more…]
